Question 1: How can I demonstrate the interconnectivity between fish and their environment through line, composition, and bold colors?
I have always had a draw towards natural sciences, and have a newfound interest in fish. Linework within the pieces emphasize the connection between fish and the environment or other organisms. The bold, yet simplistic, colors focus attention away from the complexity of the fish, allowing their features to become the focal point. The composition was pushed through the shape of background—rounded, or rough, surfaces mimic distortion of looking at fish through water.

Question 2: Describe ways your sustained investigation developed through practice, experimentation, and revision.
Through different mediums, surfaces, and gradual increase in complexity, growth was demonstrated. Pieces 1- 6 mirror the structure of scientific illustration. To make artwork visible from all angles, work 6 was painted on a round surface. In work 7, 12, and 15 a background was added to shift from a simplistic scientific style to showing a fish in its habitat. Pieces 3/4 were drawn during a dissection, and were my first live drawings. Work 13/14 uses boxes to separate the bugs from the fish. Piece 8 was drawn digitally to simplify the color palette and amplify the information present.
